Studio Treatment

Stage 1. Most of the home made acoustic panels i’ve come across look fucking shit. I get the function over form argument when it comes to rogue frequencies, yet i don’t want to feel like i’m inside a uterus while i write tunes. And i cant afford to deck out the room in $3k worth of realtraps so a compromise of sorts is in order.

I’ve made these in the same way as your standard rockwool home traps, but decided to make my life a bit harder and make triangle shaped panels in different sizes and depths in the hope they’ll look a bit nicer and still improve the sound in my room a bit.

You cant really see the fabric detail, but theres a nice stitch through it. I’m going to run another frame around the outside before i put them up on the wall….

SUBDIVIDES MINI INTERVIEW WITH HOMEWORK (NETHERLANDS) & GUEST MIX ON SUBDIVIDE RADIO ON KISS FM TUESDAY 28TH FEB 9.00AM-10.30AM

———————————————————————

Music fans, disco lovers and house junkies will all tell you that Dutch duo Homework have had a revolutionary impact on the electronic music dance scene in the past couple of years. Partners in crime Tom Waist and Zip Stolk gained notorious backing on the music circuit with their EP release of ‘Fissa Tune’ on Exploited, as it was supported by none other than the likes of Jesse Rose and Brodinkski. Soon after they found themselves signing three singles to Rose’s label ‘Made To Play’. Maintaining their versatility in sound, Homework state that they are continually moving forward with their electronic genre and never limited to one particular style. With a fast paced industry and an even faster moving electronic sound, these boys are innovators in pioneering a more emotive deeper sounding house. Their ‘Trumpet Express EP’ threw them further into the light with support from leading names Crookers, Brodinski and Round Table Knights. The talented duo were kind enough to let us ask them some questions – with which let me tell you, we found an unexpected refreshing sense of humor. Nice to see their creativity stems further than just the studio but also in their humour… Between imaginary pop bands and yoga-warm-up-disco-stretches this is what they had to say.

Subdivide: Right first things first, how did the Homework collab come about?

Homework: We both use to be in a very popular Dutch 90s boy band called Street Boys. A very pretentious synth-pop affair. But one of our band members, Luciano, found it very hard to deal with the fame and he got addicted to heroine and left us to become a post-modern poet in Berlin. At that point we decided to continue as a duo.

House music had always been close to our hearts, so it was a logical choice.

Subdivide: What is the creative process that goes into producing one of your tracks? Can you give us the brief rundown on how Homework work on a track?

Homework: We usually start with a 24-hour yoga session. That really gets us started! From that point on it’s all a big mystery to us. Usually we find ourselves days later sleeping on our 909’s, Roland Juno-2 and our DX7. Then we sleep for four days. Somewhere in between we seemed to have made music.

Subdivide: Holy Shit. So yoga stretches before studio session… Mental note.

Really diggin the vibe on your Idlewild track on Snatch! Records. What can we expect from you guys in the next twelve months?

Homework: 2 New EPs: One on 2020Vision and one on Exploited. No definite release dates yet. One remix on Gruuv, one remix on Dikso and one on OFF Recordings.

Subdivide: Looking forward to hearing the new releases. You guys are always busy touring flying around the world and on the road a lot, how do you cope with the changes scenically? Are you always producing on the road?

Homework: We always bring a View-Master with pictures of Phi Phi so that we never have to feel home sick.

Subdivide: Haha Sounds like you have that down pat. Thanks for taking the time to speak to us. Keep doing your disco stretches and we are looking forward to your next tour down under!

Homework have kindly provided us with a 30 minute guest mix on Subdivide Radio Kiss FM which can be heard next week on Tuesday 28th Feburary from 9.00am-10.30am on stations 87.6-9 or stream live on http://www.kissfm.com.au.

VISUALS – dual ipad resolume test

have been experimenting with visual control for our live show, the ipad with touch osc is fantastic but with so many parameters i found it quite disruptive changing between pages in the app all the time. enter ipad number 2 – i wanted to see if i could simultaneously connect and run 2 ipads with resolume without the system getting confused. seems to work beautifully, played around with it for 15 mins or so & is very responsive. Took some quick footage, not synced to the music or anything, just testing the network & parameter control. Track is a current work in progress, ‘Tubes’.

GIG – Smalltown : Octave One / Fritz Kalkbrenner / John Roberts

Next Friday night we have been invited to support 3 amazing international producers for the next instalment of the Smalltown series. This will most definitely be off the hook, looking forward to a long long night of low slung melodic techno & house.

STUFF

Came across a few things this week i thought I’d share……

Very cool doco from Jesse Rose, talented producer, DJ & founder of one of our favourite labels – Made To Play. Seems like a pretty nice guy too, no rockstar bullshit & really hard worker.

I was suitably excited when i came across this trailer from chemical bros for their new film, Dont Think. According to the CB’s their aim was “to capture what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd as well as showing and combining the visuals featured in the show with the footage we captured on this one night; to see how the music and visuals emotionally affect and connect with the audience.”

Footage is from Fuji Rock 2011, filmed by 20 cameras on the night. These guys don’t fuck around and their shows are unbelievable so this will definitely be worth a look on the big screen.

On the technology front, this week’s highlight for me was the release of Jazzmutant Lemur for Ipad. The writing was kind of on the wall for this but just from having a quick look, the implementation seems to be incredible. We use Touch OSC currently to control resolume for the visuals & traktor for some dj sets, does the job pretty well but some of the modules in the new lemur interface look to be a lot more advanced.

Subdivide Studio Jam – Tubes [Original Mix]

OK so have been very slack on the blog lately, have been working hard to get a bunch of new tunes finished for summer. Check out the below clip of us jamming out and recording the synth lead for one of our new tunes….
